As many skin and ear conditions can look very similar to each other, the veterinary dermatologist not only has to use his/her knowledge, but has to use a variety of diagnostic tests to get to the bottom of a problem and reach a definitive diagnosis. Correct and safe treatment can’t be given without the correct diagnosis- this is particularly important when we are dealing with conditions that are incurable such as atopic dermatitis. Skin scrapings and cytology are tests that are performed on the majority of skin cases, but other diagnostic and lab tests such as trichograms, skin biopsy, allergy testing and blood tests are performed from time to time.
